SEAboard
$0
#27604/3908

BBSXpress
Levin, Richard B.
$50
#27461/1471 [2 disks]
is a full-featured bulletin board system offering most, if not all, of the
popular features demanded by callers and sysops. There are no limits on the
number of conferences, file areas, protocols, bulletins, questionnaires, or
message sizes. System maintenance is fully automated, removing most of the
drudgery of running a BBS. The author claims that even if you have never run
a BBS before, you will probably have BBSXpress up and running in 90 minutes or
less. A hard disk and DOS 3+ are required.
EIS BBS
Langseth, Justin, ASP
$119
#1767
is an electronic mail and bulletin board system that is highly configurable.
EIS will run external programs written for RBBS and other popular bbs's.
Transfer protocols include Xmodem, Ymodem, Ymodem-G, Zmodem, and Xmodem CRC.
All of the internal databases are in Paradox Table format. Other features
include an ANSI editor, the ability to download files in batches using a
protocol like Zmodem or Ymodem-Batch, a message base packing program, and a
MegaMail off-line message reader. It is easy to set up and run.
Free Speech
Pinnacle Software
$25
#2570
is a BBS providing a very streamlined conversation system. It can operate as a
stand-alone BBS, an announcer board, a door, a front-end to other BBS's, a
modem-handler for doors, or as a night-time alternate. It can read and write
public text, and write private text for system operator.
Magpie
Manes, Steve
$75
#1315
The author claims that this is "probably the most full-featured BBS package
ever written for microcomputer." It employs a tree-structured message base.
The author also warns: "Magpie is a complex program and, as such, requires
folks willing to make an effort at learning it. Fortunately, it is not beyond
the capacity of most people to learn." Magpie requires a hard disk. It has
been successfully tested on XT's, AT's and 386's. It supports up to 9600 baud.
Maximus-CBCS
Dudley, Scott J.
$110
#27437/3039 [5 disks]
is a multi-line BBS for DOS and OS/2. It is compatible with Opus 1.03 and has
an extensive list of features, including a very sophisticated messaging
system. It can directly display the contents of several types of archives,
including ZIP, ARC, PAK and LZH. It supports Avatar graphics. It will
automatically translate IBM line-drawing characters to normal ASCII.
It supports a lightning-fast local video mode, which is aware of DoubleDOS,
DESQview, and TopView. With all these features, Maximus still uses only 146K
of RAM. The source code is available on disk #27438/3040 [2 disks].
MaxiHost
Mankin, Don, ASP
$25-$50
#27023/2331
is a personal BBS for people who want to be able to call their own system or let
a friend call it and download a few files. MaxiHost has the following
enhancements over MiniHost: improved Message System database, Message System
printing, support for 9600 and 19200 bps modems, support for Multi-taskers,
Event Scheduling, Questionnaire facility, Operator Chat hours, Trap DOOR menuing
system, Menu driven DIRECTORY changes, supports up to fifteen external file
transfer protocols, releases all but 25k of memory when in a door or in a DOS
shell, program description updates in any directory, data files may be in a
separate directory, 25 character CONFERENCE descriptions, ANSI graphics new
user, help, and goodbye screens, and more. A hard disk is recommended.
Maxihost is easy to install. In fact, almost no installation is required. (We
are not sure if there is still any need for the old Minihost.) You may have to
edit a few lines in the configuration file if you use different subdirectory
names than the ones suggested, but that is about it. We highly recommend
Maxihost for people wanting a quick and easy bulletin board system.
MiniHost
Mankin, Don, ASP
$?
#27023/769
is a quick-and-easy bulletin board system for people who want to be able to
call their own system or let a friend call it and download a few files. We
have been slow adding this program because the top communications programs,
such as Procomm and GT Powercomm, have host modes of their own, but we have
gotten some requests for a simple stand-alone program such as this one.
Christian Lucht, Feeding Hills, MA, reports that Minihost will not work with
the modem on COM4.
MegaHost 2.02B
Mankin, Don, ASP
$33-$63
